Hyundai plans to release its all-electric Ioniq before the end of 2016 and the brand already has plans to boost its range straight away.

According to the director of Hyundai’s eco-vehicles Ahn Byung-ki, the Ioniq will be able to travel more than 200 miles by 2018. When it launches early next year, the Ioniq will be able to go just 124 miles on a single charge, but changes will come swiftly to Hyundai’s newest eco-friendly vehicle.

The Chevy Bolt, which has an EPA-rated range of 238 miles, will launch before the end of 2016, throwing down the gauntlet for other electric vehicle manufacturers to match. Nissan is planning a Leaf with at least a 200-mile range, though it’s not clear when it will arrive. The Tesla Model 3 is also promising a range of 215 miles on a charge and a launch near the end of 2017.

Hyundai’s Ioniq will be available in three different electrified versions, a hybrid, plug-in hybrid and fully electric. The brand plans to use this week’s Los Angeles Auto Show to reveal new home charging stations for the Ioniq.
